Religious themes are carved in stone throughout Rajasthan using the locally available stone. The temples of Rajasthan are noted for the richness of their carvings. Some of the precious carvings are preserved in museums like this ancient and priceless image of 'Kali'- the consort of Shiva.

Today,  the stone cutters (silavats) carry on the tradition of their forefathers. In Jaipur, white marble is used for carving out statues of gods and goddesses and well as human and animal figures. Showrooms and shops at Jaipur and other towns are well stocked with figurines ranging from tiny Ganeshas to stone panels for decorating gardens.

Apart from marblem the stones used to create exquisite statues are soft, pink sandstone, tamara stone and soft chlorite of southern Rajasthan.
